TREK TO FINCA LA PRIMAVERA

If you would like to do a longer expedition, you can extend the Valle de Cocora hike beyond Reserva Acaime to the Páramo de Romerales on the border of the Parque Nacional Natural Los Nevados and to Finca La Primavera, a working farm located at an altitude of 3,680 meters (12,075 feet). All tour outfitters in Salento offer this trek, and typically this is accomplished in two days, with an overnight at Primavera. This excursion allows you to enjoy the transition from cloud forest to páramo (highland moor), the latter of which is dotted with the unusual Andean frailejón plants. The path from Acaime continues to Estrella de Agua, a research station, through the Páramo de Romerales and finally Finca La Primavera. The entire hike from Vereda de Cocora to Primavera is 16 kilometers (10 miles) and takes nine hours. On the way back, you’ll pass through Finca Argentina (3,400 meters/11,155 feet) before descending to the Valle de Cocora. This family farm is cozy, and there are lots of birds flying around, including many varieties of hummingbirds and toucans. For a slower pace, this trek can be done in three days, with the first night spent at Finca Argentina and the second at Primavera.

From Finca La Primavera, you can continue into the Parque Nacional Natural Los Nevados, hiking to snowcapped volcano Nevado del Tolima (5,215 meters/17,110 feet). For this, hikers will need four days. Another option is the less visited Paramillo del Quindío (4,750 meters/15,585 feet), which no longer has snow. From here you can take in the views of the Nevado del Tolima, Santa Isabel, and Ruiz peaks. This trek requires three days.

The company offers multiday hiking trips (2-5 days) for all fitness levels and takes care of everything. A three-day trek goes for COP$550,000 per person.
